Methods of Teaching in Higher Education

Teaching methods in higher education dictate how knowledge is transferred and constructed. The choice of method depends on the learning objectives, the nature of the content, and the characteristics of the learners. 1. Teacher-Centered vs. Learner-Centered Methods

  • Role Playing & Simulation: Creating real-life scenarios in a controlled environment (e.g., mock trials for law students, business simulations for MBA students).
  • Discussion Method: Open, democratic dialogue where students exchange ideas. Excellent for developing critical thinking and communication skills.
  • Brainstorming: Propounded by Alex Osborn. A creative group activity designed to generate a large number of ideas for the solution to a problem without immediate judgement.
  • Flipped Classroom: Students learn the basic content at home (via video lectures) and use classroom time for active problem-solving, discussion, and higher-order thinking under the teacher's guidance.
