Human and Environment Interaction
The term "anthropogenic" refers to environmental pollution and pollutants originating in human activity. Unlike natural phenomena (like volcanic eruptions), anthropogenic activities are driven by the pursuit of economic development, often leading to severe ecological imbalances.
1. Deforestation and Habitat Loss: The Western Ghats
The Western Ghats is one of the world's eight "hottest hotspots" of biological diversity. However, it faces intense anthropogenic pressure.
- Activities: Extensive logging for timber, conversion of forest land into monoculture plantations (tea, coffee, rubber), and infrastructure development (dams and railways).
- Impact: Massive loss of endemic species, increased frequency of landslides (as seen in Kerala in 2018), and disruption of the hydrological cycle. The Gadgil Committee Report (2011) explicitly warned against unfettered development in this eco-sensitive zone (Gadgil, 2011).
2. Mining and Land Degradation: The Jharia Coalfields
Mining is inherently destructive to the local environment, stripping the topsoil and disrupting groundwater tables.
- Activities: Open-cast and underground coal mining in Jharia, Jharkhand.
- Impact: Jharia is infamous for its underground coal fires, some of which have been burning for over a century. These fires cause severe land subsidence (caving in of the earth), rendering large areas uninhabitable, and release toxic fumes (carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide) continuously into the atmosphere.
3. Intensive Agriculture and Soil Toxicity: The Green Revolution
While the Green Revolution of the 1960s saved India from famine, its long-term ecological consequences in states like Punjab and Haryana have been profound.
- Activities: Over-reliance on High Yielding Variety (HYV) seeds which demand massive amounts of water, and the excessive use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides.
- Impact: Severe depletion of the groundwater table (due to deep tube wells) and soil salinization. Furthermore, pesticide runoff has polluted local water bodies, leading to biomagnification of toxins in the local food chain.
