The Mechanics of Interpretation

Solving Data Interpretation (DI) problems quickly requires proficiency in three core mathematical concepts: Percentages, Ratios, and Averages. To demonstrate these mechanics, we will use a sample data table typical of UGC NET exams.

1. Calculating Percentage Increase / Decrease

Questions frequently ask for the percentage growth over a period. The formula is:

\( \text{Percentage Change} = \left( \frac{\text{Final Value} - \text{Initial Value}}{\text{Initial Value}} \right) \times 100 \)

Example Problem:

What is the percentage increase in the production of Company B from 2018 to 2022?

Solution:

  • Initial Value (2018) = 90
  • Final Value (2022) = 145
  • Increase = 145 - 90 = 55
  • Percentage = \( (\frac{55}{90}) \times 100 \) ≈ 61.11%

2. Calculating Ratios

A ratio compares two quantities by division. When asked for a ratio, simplify the fraction to its lowest terms.

Example Problem:

What is the ratio of the total production of Company A in 2019 to the total production of Company C in 2021?

Solution:

  • Production of A (2019) = 135
  • Production of C (2021) = 150
  • Ratio = 135 : 150
  • Divide both by 15 → 9 : 10

3. Calculating Averages

The average is the sum of values divided by the number of values.

Example Problem:

What is the average annual production of Company A over the given five years?

Solution:

  • Sum = 120 + 135 + 150 + 145 + 160 = 710
  • Number of years = 5
  • Average = \( \frac{710}{5} \) = 142 (i.e., 142,000 vehicles)
