Methods of Research

Research methods are simply the different tools and techniques you use to collect data and figure out the answers to your questions. The UGC NET syllabus tests you on five main approaches: Experimental, Descriptive, Historical, Qualitative, and Quantitative.

1. Experimental Research

Experimental research is the only method that can actually prove that "A causes B" (cause-and-effect). It is done in highly controlled environments, like a science lab, so nothing accidentally messes up the results.

  • Core Rule: The researcher completely controls one thing (the Independent Variable) to see what happens to another thing (the Dependent Variable), while blocking out all outside noise.
  • Randomization: People must be randomly put into groupsβ€”one group gets the treatment (Experimental group), and the other gets nothing (Control group). This prevents bias (Fisher, 1935).
  • Example: A teacher gives Group A coffee and Group B water (Independent Variable) to see if it changes their test scores (Dependent Variable).

Ex Post Facto Research is often tested alongside experimental research. In Ex Post Facto (After-the-fact), the independent variable has already occurred and cannot be manipulated (e.g., studying the effect of an earthquake on children's anxiety). The researcher traces back to find the cause.

2. Descriptive Research

Descriptive research aims to accurately and systematically describe a population, situation, or phenomenon. It answers "what," "when," "where," and "how," but not "why."

  • Characteristics: The researcher has no control over the variables; they can only report what has happened or what is happening (Kothari, 2004).
  • Survey Research: A primary form of descriptive research where questionnaires or interviews are used to gather data from a large sample.
  • Correlational Research: Explores the statistical relationship between two variables without asserting causation (e.g., relationship between hours studied and GPA).
🍎 Real-World Example (Indian Context):

The massive Government of India Census, conducted every 10 years, is a prime example of Descriptive Research. It tells the government exactly how many people live in a district and what their demographics (age, literacy, occupation) are, but the census itself does not attempt to explain why people migrated or chose to live there.

3. Historical Research

Historical research involves the critical investigation of past events, developments, and experiences to understand the present and anticipate the future.

  • Primary Sources: Original documents, eyewitness accounts, relics, artifacts (e.g., Mahatma Gandhi's original letters).
  • Secondary Sources: Accounts written by someone who was not present at the event (e.g., a modern history textbook).
  • Internal vs. External Criticism:
    • External Criticism: Determines the authenticity and genuineness of the source document itself (e.g., is this paper actually from 1920?).
    • Internal Criticism: Determines the accuracy, truthfulness, and bias of the content within the document.

4. Qualitative vs. Quantitative Methods

This is the biggest divide in all of research. Are you dealing with numbers, or are you dealing with words and feelings?

A. Quantitative Research (Numbers & Logic)

This comes from the Positivist worldview. It is all about collecting hard numbers to prove a point to a large population.

  • Style: Very objective, strict, and uses numbers.
  • How to collect data: Multiple-choice surveys, structured questionnaires, and clinical trials.
  • How to analyze: Using math and statistics software (like SPSS or Excel).
  • Main Goal: To test a specific guess (hypothesis) and create universal rules.

B. Qualitative Research (Words & Meanings)

This comes from the Post-positivist worldview. It doesn't care about numbers; it cares about understanding the deep reasons why people do what they do.

  • Style: Subjective, flexible, and uses words and stories instead of math.
  • How to collect data: Long one-on-one interviews, focus groups, and hanging out with people to observe them.
  • How to analyze: Looking for common themes or patterns in what people said.
  • Main Goal: To understand a situation deeply and build a new theory from scratch.
🍎 Real-World Example (Qualitative):

An anthropologist spends two years living with the Jarawa or Sentinelese tribes in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands (Ethnography). They don't use statistical surveys or multiple-choice questionnaires; instead, they conduct deep observational studies, document daily rituals, and write narrative field notes to understand the tribe's cultural values from within.
