Steps of Research
Research is a systematic process. While qualitative research may be iterative and flexible, quantitative scientific research strictly follows a sequential, logical series of steps to ensure validity and reliability (Kothari, 2004). The NTA frequently tests candidates on the exact chronological order of these steps.
The Standard 6-Step Research Process
Step 1: Formulating the Research Problem
This is the most crucial step. A problem well-defined is a problem half-solved. It involves identifying a broad area of interest, narrowing it down to a specific issue, and stating it clearly.
- Review of Literature: Before finalizing the problem, the researcher must conduct an extensive review of existing literature to identify gaps in knowledge and ensure the study hasn't already been done.
- Setting Objectives: Clearly defining the primary and secondary objectives of the study.
Step 2: Formulating the Hypothesis
A hypothesis is a tentative assumption or an educated guess made in order to draw out and test its logical or empirical consequences (Kerlinger, 1986).
- Null Hypothesis (H0): States that there is no relationship or significant difference between variables. Researchers generally try to reject the null hypothesis.
- Alternative Hypothesis (H1): States that there is a relationship or difference.
Step 3: Developing the Research Design
The research design is the conceptual blueprint within which research is conducted. It constitutes the blueprint for the collection, measurement, and analysis of data.
- Determines the methodology (Experimental, Descriptive, etc.).
- Defines the Sample Design: Identifying the target population and selecting a sampling method (Probability vs. Non-Probability).
- Probability Sampling: Random, Stratified, Cluster, Systematic.
- Non-Probability Sampling: Purposive, Snowball, Quota, Convenience.

Step 4: Collecting the Data
Execution of the research design. The researcher gathers information using specific instruments.
- Primary Data: Data collected fresh and for the first time directly by the researcher (e.g., Questionnaires, Interviews, Observations).
- Secondary Data: Data that has already been collected and analyzed by someone else (e.g., Census data, journal articles, historical records).
Step 5: Analyzing the Data
Raw data is meaningless until it is processed and analyzed. This step involves:
- Editing & Coding: Cleaning the data and assigning numbers/symbols to responses for categorization.
- Statistical Analysis: Applying descriptive statistics (mean, median, standard deviation) and inferential statistics (t-test, ANOVA, Chi-square).
- Hypothesis Testing: Using statistical tests to determine whether to accept or reject the Null Hypothesis (H0).
Step 6: Interpretation and Report Writing
The final step involves drawing conclusions based on the data analysis and presenting the findings in a structured academic report or thesis.

- Stating the limitations of the study.
